An estimated 39 million people worldwide are infected with H.I.V. / AIDS. The
virus has gained a
foothold in more than 150 countries on six continents. And
H.I.V. is now the leading cause of death worldwide among people ages 15 through
59, according to the World Health Organization. South
Africa has the highest
number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world. More than five million
people in the country are infected.
"Death is absolutely everywhere. My feeling is that when one part of the human
family is under
siege, the privileged part of the human family should respond.
You do not write off the lives of hundreds of millions of people. This is
allegedly an independent world which we care about each other. A degree of
compassion and feeling and generosity of spirit is required."
Stephen Lewis ( U.N. special envoy for H.I.V./ AIDS in Africa )

"Recording this story makes me think that I’m bringing someone into my life.
That person is withy me every day. Every time she hears a dog bark, it’s like
she is waking up into my yard. When she hears the water, it’s like she is
opening my tap. I feel like I’ve taken that person to South Africa, into my
shack, and into my township...
into my everyday routine".
